What is LOLER testing?
LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It is a set of health and safety regulations in the United Kingdom that govern the use of lifting equipment. LOLER requires that all lifting equipment be properly inspected and tested on a regular basis to ensure that it is safe to use.
A LOLER inspection is a thorough examination of lifting equipment by a competent person. This person must be qualified to assess the safety of lifting equipment and have the necessary knowledge, experience to identify any potential hazards and be independent so objective decisions can be made.
The LOLER inspection will typically include the following:
- A visual inspection of the equipment to identify any obvious defects.
- A functional test of the equipment to ensure that it operates correctly.
- A load test to ensure that the equipment is capable of lifting the weight it is designed for.
If any defects are found during the LOLER inspection, the equipment must be repaired or replaced before it can be used again. The LOLER inspection report must be kept on file and made available to the relevant authorities if requested.
LOLER inspections are essential to ensure the safety of lifting equipment. By following the LOLER regulations, businesses can help to prevent accidents and injuries caused by the use of lifting equipment.
Some of the benefits of LOLER testing include:
- It helps to ensure that lifting equipment is safe to use.
- It can help to prevent accidents and injuries.
- It can help to protect businesses from legal liability.
- It can help to improve employee morale and productivity.
If you have any lifting equipment in your workplace, it is important to have it LOLER tested regularly, as it helps to keep your employees safe and your business compliant with the law.
